Kamigamo Shrine.
The official name is Kamowakeikazuchi Shrine. The year it was founded is unknown, but it is said to be the oldest shrine in Kyoto, as the enshrined deity descended there about 2,600 years ago. Along with Shimogamo Shrine, which also enshrines the ancestral deity of the Kamo clan, it was revered as a shrine for the protection of the imperial castle, and was given a ranking second only to Ise Shrine. There are approximately 60 buildings, including the main shrine and Gonden, which are national treasures, and 41 buildings that are important cultural properties. Along with 17 other temples and shrines and castles near Kyoto, it has been registered as a World Heritage Site as a ``cultural property of ancient Kyoto.''
